As it turns out, my parents afforded me more than this uneven haircut. In 1999, they moved our family from Serbia to the U.S. for an opportunity at a better life. 

I'm currently in Brand Management at Wieden+Kennedy Portland, trying to making that opportunity worthwhile - and getting marginally better haircuts in the meantime.
